Azim Premji Foundation Launches Social Startups Programme to Fund 100 First-Time NGO Founders in 2026

Azim Premji Foundation Social Startups Programme 2026 India first-time founders

The Azim Premji Foundation Social Startups Programme is now open for applications, offering first-time NGO founders in India a structured path to build grassroots civil society organisations with financial support, mentorship, and a seed grant of Rs 15 to 20 lakh per year. Applications are open from 1 November to 31 December 2026 for the first cohort of approximately 100 participants.

What Is the Azim Premji Foundation Social Startups Programme?

The Azim Premji Foundation Social Startups Programme is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Bengaluru-based Foundation to help development sector professionals launch their own civil society organisations. Unlike the Foundation’s regular grants programme, which supports existing registered organisations, this programme is designed exclusively for people who have never founded an organisation before. The first cohort will operate across Odisha, the North-East, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Bengaluru Urban.

Why the Foundation Launched This Programme

“We need more organisations working at the grassroots, especially in underserved areas. Many experienced professionals understand the challenges communities face and want to contribute more,” said Rajib Ghosh, Head of Philanthropy at the Azim Premji Foundation. “This programme aims to help them take that step and build organisations of their own.”

The programme targets a specific gap in India’s development sector. Thousands of experienced field workers understand community needs at a granular level but lack access to startup capital, institutional backing, and the operational knowledge required to register and run a formal civil society organisation. The Foundation is betting that removing those barriers will unlock a new generation of grassroots leadership.

Who Can Apply for the Social Startups Programme

The eligibility criteria are specific. Applicants must be first-time founders who have not previously registered an organisation. They must be below 40 years of age, hold a graduate degree, and have at least three years of ground-level experience in the development sector. Preference will be given to candidates under 35. Applicants must also be willing to relocate to and commit to their chosen geography for the long term.

The supported areas of work include rural livelihoods, health, youth, mental health, disability, children’s welfare, the well-being of Adivasi communities, and welfare rights. In urban informal settlements, the programme will back work such as creches and community sanitation initiatives. The geographic focus on Odisha, the North-East, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Bengaluru Urban reflects the Foundation’s existing field presence in underserved and high-need areas.

How the Programme Works: Two Phases Explained

The Social Startups Programme runs in two distinct phases designed to take participants from idea to registered organisation to operational grant recipient.

The first phase is an eight-month seeding phase beginning 1 April 2027. During this period, selected participants will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 45,000, totalling approximately Rs 3.6 lakh per person over eight months. The seeding phase includes a one-month residential boot camp, fieldwork, community interaction, peer learning, and guidance on registration, governance, finance, budgeting, monitoring, and HR. By the end of the seeding phase, participants are expected to have registered their organisations.

The second phase is a two-year seed grant. Participants who successfully register their organisations and meet the programme’s criteria can submit a grant proposal and receive Rs 15 to 20 lakh per year, depending on milestones. Assessment for progression to the grant phase will take place in November and December 2027.

Selection involves eligibility screening, document review, a statement of purpose, an online interview, and an in-person panel discussion. Applications are open until 31 December 2026.

How This Fits the Foundation’s Broader Work

The Azim Premji Foundation is one of India’s largest philanthropic organisations, established in 2001 by Wipro founder chairman Azim Premji. Premji has given most of his personal wealth to the Foundation, which holds 66% economic ownership of Wipro as part of its endowment structure. The Foundation currently supports over 1,640 not-for-profit organisations across India through multi-year grants, and selectively through corpus grants.

The Foundation operates 59 field institutions across six states, 12 demonstration and training schools, and 296 Teacher Learning Centres in disadvantaged districts. It employs more than 2,000 field staff across 300 locations. The Social Startups Programme sits alongside this existing infrastructure, giving new founders access to an institution with deep on-the-ground presence in the geographies they will work in.

The programme is distinct from the Foundation’s existing grants arm, which requires organisations to already be registered. By targeting first-time founders before registration, the Foundation is effectively expanding its pipeline of civil society organisations from the ground up.

Key Takeaways for India’s Development Sector

The Azim Premji Foundation Social Startups Programme is a rare structured pathway for development professionals who want to transition from employee to founder. The combination of a Rs 45,000 monthly honorarium during the seeding phase and a potential Rs 15 to 20 lakh annual seed grant removes two of the biggest barriers to starting a grassroots organisation: income security during the early phase and access to initial operating capital. The focus on first-time founders under 40 with ground-level experience signals that the Foundation is prioritising practitioners with real community knowledge over credentialed applicants with institutional backgrounds. Applications close 31 December 2026.
