Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) has announced plans to invest $250 million in India over the next three years, doubling its headcount and expanding facilities in Bengaluru and Hyderabad as the global semiconductor giant deepens its two-decade commitment to the country. The announcement, made on 29 July 2026, coincides with Marvell’s 20th anniversary of engineering operations in India and signals a significant acceleration in the company’s India-first strategy for AI and semiconductor innovation.

The Scale of Marvell’s India Investment

Marvell established operations in Bengaluru in 2006 and has since grown India into the company’s second-largest R&D organisation worldwide. Its engineering teams span Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, and have developed deep expertise across advanced process technologies including 2nm and beyond, high-speed analog IP, subsystem design, software and firmware development, and end-to-end silicon development.

The $250 million investment will fund a new wing at the company’s Bengaluru office, an expanded presence in Hyderabad, and a doubling of total India headcount over three years. The expanded footprint will strengthen Marvell’s global innovation network, with Indian engineers contributing directly to the design and development of advanced semiconductor solutions for AI, cloud and data infrastructure applications.

“India has become a strategic hub of engineering excellence for Marvell, playing a critical role in advancing the infrastructure technologies that power the world’s leading hyperscalers and cloud providers,” said Navin Bishnoi, Vice President and India Country Manager at Marvell. “As we celebrate 20 years in India, we remain committed to expanding R&D investments, strengthening the country’s semiconductor ecosystem and developing the next generation of technology talent.”

Why India and Why Now

Marvell’s announcement is the latest in a series of major semiconductor investments in India, as global chipmakers respond to both government incentives and the country’s growing pool of engineering talent. India’s semiconductor mission, backed by substantial government funding, has made the country an increasingly attractive destination for high-value chip design and R&D activity.

For Marvell specifically, India represents more than a cost-efficient engineering hub. The company’s India teams hold multiple patents and are playing a leading role in applying advanced AI tools to accelerate engineering productivity and innovation. With the AI chip market expanding rapidly and demand for custom silicon from hyperscalers intensifying, Marvell’s decision to double down in India reflects the strategic value of its Indian engineering workforce.

Marvell’s core business in AI infrastructure is growing strongly. The company designs custom silicon for the world’s largest cloud providers, including co-packaged optics, data processing units and networking chips, and its India teams contribute directly to these programmes. Doubling headcount in this context is not just a talent investment: it is a bet on India’s ability to help Marvell keep pace with accelerating customer demand for next-generation AI infrastructure.

The MSTEM Scholarship Programme

Alongside its infrastructure investment, Marvell has underscored its commitment to long-term talent development through the Marvell Scholarship for Technical and Engineering Merit (MSTEM) programme, launched earlier this year. Designed to cultivate the next generation of AI and semiconductor innovators, MSTEM supports students pursuing degrees in electronics, electrical engineering and computer science through financial assistance and hands-on industry engagement.

The programme attracted more than 7,000 applicants from leading universities across India in its inaugural year. Of those, 100 outstanding students were selected to receive scholarships. Marvell intends the programme to strengthen India’s technology talent pipeline and prepare students for careers at the frontier of semiconductor and AI innovation, while also building a longer-term hiring pipeline into the company’s own growing India organisation.

Marvell’s Ecosystem Approach

Beyond its own operations, Marvell is investing in the broader Indian semiconductor ecosystem. The company collaborates with leading universities to support internship programmes, faculty development initiatives, joint research projects and curriculum development. It also works with emerging startups through mentorship and strategic collaborations in areas aligned with its technology portfolio, and engages with industry associations and government bodies to support the continued growth of India’s semiconductor sector.

India’s semiconductor ecosystem has seen substantial momentum in recent years. Global chipmakers including Micron, Applied Materials and now Marvell have each made significant commitments, while domestic players and startups are also beginning to emerge. Marvell’s $250 million investment adds another anchor tenant to what is becoming a genuinely competitive semiconductor R&D landscape in India, particularly in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

What This Means for Indian Semiconductor Startups

For Indian semiconductor founders and engineers, Marvell’s expansion carries several implications. The doubling of headcount across Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad will intensify competition for experienced chip design engineers, potentially driving up salaries and talent expectations across the sector.

At the same time, the influx of experienced engineers trained within Marvell’s world-class design environment historically feeds the startup ecosystem over time. Companies like Marvell have been among the most significant contributors to India’s semiconductor talent base, and their continued expansion increases the pool of experienced professionals who may eventually found or join domestic semiconductor ventures.
